Please forgive the successive posts but weather is important here. I spend a lot of time on the road. Here, the most common car sticker is a window sticker that says My Job Depends on AG. I want one, because my life depends on agriculture.
Most of the fresh fruit and produce you eat comes from California (sorry Florida you have no lettuce). We literally feed the world.
We get almost no ag subsidies (really only cotton) and pay far more in federal taxes (40 million people and the largest state economy) than we get back
Please think about us when a restaurant serves you a nice salad in December. It likely came from Imperial Valley/Coachella/El Centro/ Yuma. Please look at labels and buy US commodities, which have the best food safety and sanitation standards ANYWHERE.
In the USA we produce the most and highest quality food far beyond anywhere else in the world. We should be proud that we feed the world. I am.
I’m mad because Hillary is fucking with my clients and I have been drinking a touch. My pro bono farm worker clients are in fucking WikiLeaks. How am I supposed to fight the next President? I just want to play with my car.
I represent Silvia Lopez and the other workers for free, workers who dont want to pay a union they did not choose. You can AMA or look at pickjustice.com or Google Gerawan and UFW and Silvia Lopez if you want to know what is going on. The short story is that we want the workers’ votes to be counted and the union and their powerful politician friends want to destroy their ballots.

Ask a European about US food safety standards. Our meat is shit and we have some sort of E. coli or lysteria outbreak on a monthly basis. I have several Swiss friends who are terrified of TTIP gettin approved because they don’t want our crappy food standards getting into Switzerland. . To say the US has the world’s best food safety and sanitation is patently false. Then again, you are a lawyer...
My dad worked on a farm as a kid. Based on his experience, I grow my own veggies and buy my meat from local, small ranchers at my local farmers market. The corruption within big ag makes Hillar’s emails look like child’s play.
Regarding your comment about lettuce in winter: CA is in a draught and AZ has been in a draught for two decades. If you’re eating lettuce from CA or AZ in winter, you’re contributing to that draught. If you can’t grow your own lettuce and you don’t want lettuce from the southern hemisphere, then don’t eat lettuce in the winter. Pretty simple.
Sorry for the real talk, but I’m not a lawyer, and have watched the SW US ruined by big agriculture. I’m surrounded by wasteland that once use to be beautiful deserts. I see cattle ruin pristine wilderness on a weekly basis. Yes, big ag benefits all of us as it is much easier to go to the grocery store and buy whatever you want whenever you want. Often times, the easiest way isn’t the best way.
I’m not trying to be a dick right now. Let’s pretend we are on a hot back porch drinking and just speaking our minds. No internet bs. If I’m ever in your area we can drink tequila and listen to some punk rock.

I’ve worked directly for big at producers. I feel no love lost when they have poo flung their way. And as far as sanitation goes most people will never get a clear view of that one. It varies farm to farm region to region. Companies want to maximize profits and that normally comes with skirting the policies put in place along with paying employees so little that they will not put as much care into the practices as need be. I have to agree with Skychismo, there is no corruption like at corruption and that is before you even get to the largest companies in the industry.

There aren’t any winners here. You have Big AG, who make foods cheaper, but at the expense of natural lands. You have the unions, who stand up for workers rights, but also toss workers around in an almost Mafia -like fashion. You have Hillary, who is corrupt and scheming, but almost not a racist. It sucks that your clients are probably going to be fucked over my system- at least you have the balls to stand up for them.
